While the other kids on my block watched MTV, I waited for my New Yorker subscription to arrive in the mail. During high school, I also watched the mail for rejection slips from eminent editors. (To those editors, I offer my belated apologies for the bad poetry.)
These days, I’m enjoying better luck as a writer. I’m a freelancer specializing in the subjects of health, nutrition, travel, and investigative journalism. I write for health and women’s magazines, including Oxygen, Natural Health, Women’s Health & Fitness, Clean Eating, and Alternative Medicine. I also write investigative news pieces, profiles, and interviews for Albuquerque’s alternative newsweekly, the Alibi. (As a reporter, I love a good rake through the muck!) I contribute to business and trade publications, like NACUFS, and online magazines, like Salon.
I’m serious about health and nutrition in my own life, as well as in my writing. I eat a mostly raw, vegetarian diet, but only after years of indulgence in forbidden foods and bad habits. Now that I’m reformed, I counsel others on how to improve their diet and live a healthier lifestyle. I practice hatha (mostly Bikram's) yoga regularly and am training for my first half marathon. Originally from the East coast, I now live in New Mexico (but will forever root for the Red Sox).
I’m formerly the host of a long-running reading series in New York City, and have interviewed a glittering list of celebrities, including Mel Gibson, Sandra Bullock, Val Kilmer, and writer/director Neil Jordan. My own big-screen stardom, however brief, happened when I appeared as a commentator on C-SPAN with Dave Eggers. (My fame, I believe, was just over five minutes long.)
I hold a B.A. from New York University and a M.S. from Pace University, which I received after a stint as a New York City Teaching Fellow. I taught English at the Secondary School for Journalism in Brooklyn, where I started the school’s first student newspaper. I also do desktop publishing, copywriting, and editing for newsletters, newspapers, and business and marketing materials.
